There are two ways to get involved:

A) Non-Operational / Support Member

Helps with logistics, admin, fundraising, grants, hall/equipment maintenance, technology, communications, and board service. These roles are essential for keeping our team mission-ready.

B) Operational / Active GSAR Member

Involves completing the BC provincial Ground Search & Rescue (GSAR) program (approx. 80–100 hours) covering navigation, search tactics, survival, communications, helicopter safety basics, avalanche awareness, rope fundamentals, and more. This course is delivered by volunteer trainers with oversight from the Justice Institute of BC (JIBC) and the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness (EMCR). Program completion can take up to two years.

After GSAR certification, members may pursue specialties (e.g., Rope, Organized Avalanche Response, Search Management) through JIBC courses scheduled provincially. Tuition is covered by EMCR/partners, though some travel/meals may be at the member or team’s expense depending on course type.

Operational / Active GSAR Members continue to support the organization as trainers, board members, and support volunteers.
